Summary: Disappointing!
Comment: If I hadn't misplaced all the shipping materials, I would have returned this.

Pros:
It does a good job of up-sampling DVDs to 1080p.
The unit isn't ugly.

Cons:
DVDs burned on this unit do not work (unknown format) in another Philips DVD Player, a Panasonic, and a Bose. I was able to read them on my PC.

The design engineers think differently than I do. Things are not intuitive. You must keep the user manual around and even then it isn't easy to get this to work predictably. No, it's not just me. I'm a design engineer and know about user interfaces and have had decades of experience with gadgets.

I wanted this mainly to watch some sports events on a delay. For whatever reason, I pushed the wrong button at the wrong time and was not able to view what I recorded.

Pause Live TV does not work effortlessly. I thought I could start a game then pause it and come back and watch it delayed. When I came back the recorder had slipped out of pause! It seems to have a mind of its own.

This unit is entirely too expensive for what it does. Tivo HD is a far better value. I have both, so I know.

Summary: Philips Digital DVR with harddrive
Comment: Came with all the wires I needed so setup was easy and quick. Setting up and using the DVR to record was easy. So far I have only used the hard drive. But I find it easy to use, good quality playback... I'm happy.

I had thought that you could view your 'titles' meant that you would get the title of the show recorded displayed, or at least be able to add it, but that isn't the case. Titles simply means the items that are recorded and they display with a video capture from the start of the recording (which may be a screenshot of the show or, more likely, a commercial or credits from the show before) but you also get to see the settings which can help you figure out what the 'title' is plus it plays a preview as well so you can choose the 'title' you want from your list.

I had also thought this allowed you to record more than one channel at a time, but if you can do that I can't figure out how. And the directions don't make it clear either. That won't be an issue... unless like me you are using the DVR to tune in digital channels since your old tv can't... In order to record one channel and watch another it looks like we will still need another converter box for the tv.

Summary: Great DVR with no monthly fees
Comment: I've had the Philips DVR for a few weeks now, and I am very happy with it. It comes with standard a/v cables that give an okay image. Once it was hooked up with a HDMI cable (nice, cheap one through Amazon), the picture was great, both for standard and digital cable (yes, it will record digital channels) and the upscaling of standard DVDs. It is easy to set-up, and programming the timer is very intuitive, with multiple recording quality settings (nicely compared in the manual) and chaptering settings (in the setup screen). Additionally, the quick start and full manual are very well organized and easy to understand for those who need them. It allows you to pause live TV, as well, and includes good on-screen instruction for using it. When watching recorded shows, you can skip forward or back 30 sec to 1 minute (determined through the setup). Shows copied to the hard disk can be edited and burned to DVD; I haven't tried this yet. You can also record shows directly to a DVD or DVD RW. Lastly, it has front inputs for USB and i.link, nicely hidden behind a panel.

There are just a few minor things keeping it from receiving a 5-star rating. First, no HDMI cable included (most electronics don't include this; I suspect a conspiracy with certain companies charging $100 for 6 feet of cable... but I digress). Second, when it is recording to the hard drive, it has a bright blue LED that is a bit distracting on its face. Third, while recording, it will only show the channel it is recording on. This could be a problem if you are using it for a TV tuner; I just switch from the HDMI input to TV. None of these are deal-breakers, just little annoyances.

I have no regrets getting this over a TiVo, and it is definitely better than what the cable companies offer.
